Here is a selection of my small stage images from 2019 – burlesque, cabaret, dance, etc. As always, it’s interesting to go back through the images, and I noticed a couple of differences this year. For one, there are less shows than I’ve shot in prior years. I think this is in part due to their simply being less shows, but also because this year I started to charge to photograph shows. My somewhat overdue premise for this has been that if everyone else was getting paid, so should the shooter. And thanks to everyone who has supported me, BTW, as I had a couple of serious attacks of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) in 2019, as I added FUJI’s excellent mirrorless gear to my arsenal here.

More images are in black and white than in the past, as well. Sometimes I’ve done this to salvage an image where the lighting is so bad a colour version won’t work, but this year, more images just seemed to suit the monochrome format better. It’s important for you to know that my selection isn’t a judgment on performances I saw this year, which were uniformly terrific. These are simply the images I made that I like the most.

I’ve had the chance to work with some terrific performers and producers this past year, including Breakaway Entertainment, High Society Cabaret, Zyra Lee, Nerd Girl Burlesque, PeepshowTO, Southing Strange and of course, the Toronto Burlesque Festival. Here’s to more in 2020.
