The Canadian Opera Company’s Canadian World Premiere of Pyramus & Thisbe opened this past Tuesday. I was more involved with photographing this production than in the past, having shot an early blocking rehearsal, the dress rehearsal (these images) and the reception after the opening. From a photo perspective this production – shorter than most at 80 minutes – had several challenges:

  • A small cast, spread across a wide stage for the better part of the production
  • High lighting contrast between the lead performers’ white clothing and the darkness of the rest of the cast and set
  • Glare from the backdrop

From the viewpoint of the audience, it’s visually quite striking, and musically interesting. It’s been getting great reviews, and you should see it if you have the chance.
